The German home shopping market is valued at annual 40-41 billion Deutsche Marks (DM), of which around 50% is made up of clothing sales. Home shopping currently accounts for some 10% of total western German retail sales, and over 25% in eastern Germany. Main industry players include Neckermann, Quelle, and Otto. Digital TV broadcasts to allow access to the Internet

America Online and Bertelsmann are offering online services on domestic television in trials using a Mediabox decoder. It is claimed that the services will offer improved picture quality and speed. In Germany, 65% of homes have access to online services via cable. The two companies are also planning to acquire 33% of T-Online, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, which is to renamed Online Pro Dienste.
