Hongkong Land girds itself
Article Abstract:
Hongkong Land Holdings Ltd., a property investment and development unit of UK-owned Jardine Matheson, is preparing itself to withstand competition in its core commercial-property in Hong Kong. Company director Ian Hawksworth expects that the property market in Hong Kong will be very competitive in the next 18 months or so because of the emergence of new buildings, particularly in the Central business district of Hong Kong. Although HongKong Land has maintained its rental earnings during the first half of 1998, even with the emergence of new buildings, the company is bracing itself to bear effects of increased competition in the next two years.

Chek Lap Kok Airport opens amid economic turbulence

Hong Kong's new International Airport at Chek Lap Kok opened on Jul. 6, 1998, at a time of economic unrest in the Asian region. The sleek, ultramodern airport, located at the 1,234-hectare island, was supposed to symbolize a new Hong Kong and profit as the undisputed hub in the region. However, the opening of the airport coincided with an alarming descent of the tourism industry, a burst property bubble and the area's first-ever recession since 1985. The airport boasts of a marvelous architecture, but is seen to be not enough to alleviate the slump.

Coke Taiwan Ltd's new bottling plant provides children with a history lesson that spans 133 years. The museum serves as a shrine to every artifact, advertisement and bottle that have ever been produced for the soft drink company. Constructing the museum was a smart move that was designed to promote customer loyalty. Since its opening in 1998, over 20,000 people, the majority of which are schoolchildren, have come to visit.
