The UK household disposable paper products market grew 2.3% to 1,893.4 million pounds sterling in 1997 from 1996, although sales grew just 8.5% during 1993-1997 in current value terms. Disposable paper product sales declined 2.7% in real terms during 1992-1996. Personal paper products accounted for 47.5% of sales by value in 1997. The disposable paper products market consists of three sectors, with household paper products worth around 217 million pounds sterling in 1997 and personal products 900 million pounds sterling in 1997. The remaining sector is tissue.

Retail sales of tissue disposable paper products in the UK were worth 981.7 million pounds sterling in 1998, a rise of 2.4% from 1994. The most significant market sector in value terms was toilet tissue, holding a share of 80.6% in 1998. In the period 1994 to 1998, the most rapidly expanding sector was facial tissue, rising 2.9%. Private label held 45% of value sales in the toilet tissue sector and 48.9% of value sales in the facial tissue sector in 1998. Supermarkets and hypermarkets accounted for 72.4% of retail sales by value.

Value sales of household disposable paper products in the UK increased by 21.2% in the period 1994 to 1998, reaching 231.9 million pounds sterling. The most significant market sector in value terms was kitchen towels, representing 87% of value sales in 1998. However, value sales expanded most strongly in the paper tableware subsector in the period 1994 to 1998, growing 27.5%. There is strong maturity and competition in all sectors, and manufacturers are therefore expanding their premium product ranges.
