Howard's ends: he plans modest change, not a revolution
Article Abstract:
As Australia's new prime minister, John Howard is likely to make modest rather than bold policy changes reflecting a more business-friendly administration. Ties to Asia will continue to receive emphasis, and tighter visa requirements will not greatly affect existing liberal immigration rules. Labor relations will likely be testy, but business confidence should improve significantly. Controversy will erupt soon over plans to sell one-third of govt-owned communications corp Telstra, and to permit more uranium mines.

Howard's horrors: the prime minister labours under a mid-term crisis
Article Abstract:
Australian prime minister John Howard has faced weeks of controversy over the resignation of Geoff Prosser, minister for small business, due to conflicts of interest. Howard is also facing criticism about incompetent ministers, unemployment, racial tensions and Aborigine rights. There are concerns that Howard is too indecisive, and his failure to address the unemployment issue in particular, has contributed to the rising popularity of Pauline Hanson, independent MP, and her One National Party.
