In harm's way
Article Abstract:
The US Army's AH-64D-equipped 227th Aviation Regiment AHB, 1st Battalion (1-227th) of the First Cavalry Division has gone to Fort Hood, TX, to gain operational status by engaging the 21st Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat) in training operations. Col. Winn Noyes, commanding officer of the 21st Cavalry Brigade, said that the certification process provides the Army with a consistent standard which combat helicopter units must meet before they are sent to the field. Lt. Col. Mike Riley, battalion commander of the 1-227th, said that the unique element of their certification process is the capabilities of the AH-64D attack helicopter. He said that the AH-64D has a very excellent fire control radar, radar frequency interferometer system and tactical situation awareness system.

Old choir, new song sheet
Article Abstract:
The US Army has submitted its Modernization Plan (Mod Plan) to the US Congress. Army aviation, which failed to advance its Task Force Hawk proposal in the summer of 1999, is pinning its hopes on an 'Objective Force' that is composed of heavy-lift, reconnaissance, attack and assault helicopter types. Central to the latest Mod Plan proposal is Army aviation's increased desire to get the Comanche helicopter into service.
