Indexing the globe
Article Abstract:
Pension funds follow bets practice rules, matching assets and liabiliteies, which means that they tend to focus on home markets. Indices are used to define asset classes invested in by pension funds, and selection of indices as benchmarks affects performance as much as selection of managers. Indices may not provide sufficient diversification. There is a plan to set up an index of multinationals, though an alternative is for world market capitalisation to be used as a guideline, not liabilities.
