Information technology and organisation within European small enterprises
Article Abstract:
Most employment in the European region is provided by small enterprises (SEs) which account for more than 90% of businesses in the European Union (EU). Around 80% of new enterprises in the EU are in service sectors, particularly catering, retail and hotels. Information technology (IT) has an important role to play in the functioning of SEs, with a firm's ability to use appropriate IT being linked to its competitive success. An investigation of the use of IT by SEs in six European countries/regions shows that successful strategic opportunities are obtained through organisational and technological innovation.

Linking IT and business strategy: the role and responsibility of senior management
Article Abstract:
Continental Bank (CB) (US), bank, outsources its Information Technology (IT), whilst Banco Comercial Portugues (BCP) (Portugal), bank, handles its own IT. BCP has been highly successful in its technological activities, which have resulted in the bank developing from a small new bank in the mid-1980s to one of the leading Portuguese banks in 1996. CB's strategy has also proved successful. A comparison of the two systems indicates that IT can be outsourced, but that the management of IT cannot.
