Below the sea, East Asia forges more telecom links with the U.S
Article Abstract:
A fifth cable linking East Asia's communication systems with the US was switched on in early Jan. 1996 to increase telecommunication traffic between the two continents. Called Trans-Pacific Cable 5 Cable Network, the northern route will increase capacity and together with the southern route can accommodate 10 gigabits of data a second. The other three cables can accommodate only three gigabits per second of capacity. All five cables are laid out under Japan's seafloor because it was the only country which allowed direct links to the US. However, South Korea and China are planning a similar project.
