Investing in the Soviet Union
Article Abstract:
One of the major opportunities for corporations can be found in investing in the USSR. The USSR allowed equity joint enterprises to be created in the USSR with foreign participation in 1986. Over 3,000 of equity joint enterprises have been registered, and approximately one-third of the registered organizations are operating. Legislation regarding such issues as patents, taxation, and legal aspects of business relationships has been modified and will be effective on Jan 1, 1992. The changes in the laws, designed to help the USSR make the transition to a market economy, are revolutionary. The USSR Fundamental Principles of Legislation on Foreign Investments in the USSR were enacted on Jun 27, 1991, to protect foreign investment in the country.

Investing institutions start to flex their muscles in the US boardroom
Article Abstract:
Shareholders are beginning to assert themselves by questioning boards of directors about all aspects of corporate management. Shareholders are challenging the activities and composition of boards of directors, as well as the proxy voting process. An average of 36% of shareholders voted on corporate governance proposals in 1990, compared to only 7% in 1986. Some companies have begun to adopt certain proposals advocated by shareholders, but more concrete actions, such as putting up nominees to boards, are needed before boards can be held accountable.
