Market rationalisation
Article Abstract:
Privatization of New Zealand's banking system was completed by the acquisition of the country's last locally owned bank, the Bank of New Zealand, by National Australia Bank in 1992. National Australia, ANZ Bank, Lloyds and the Bank of Scotland are now New Zealand's four principal foreign banks with more than one license. Not all New Zealand banks are striving to reduce overbanking. In addition, New Zealand's central bank, the Reserve Bank, has called for greater reliance on market forces through fuller public disclosure and other changes.

Nuclear test
Article Abstract:
The government of New Zealand Prime Minister James Bolger does not enjoy good relations with the US. The primary reason is the ban on nuclear weapons and nuclear-run ships in New Zealand territory, a law passed in 1985. In 1992, however, the New Zealand government is seen to be succumbing to public pressure to relax the prohibition if tests indicate nuclear-powered ships were safe.
