Model housing
Article Abstract:
Robert and Brenda Vale have designed five new ecological houses in Nottinghamshire, England. The houses have been sold on a 999 year lease to people who agree to work regularly on a number of projects linked to the site, such as carrying out repairs on the houses. The houses are built so as not to need central heating run on fossil fuels. Heat is obtained by solar panels on double height conservatories. Windows and doors are tripled glazed. Water is gathered from the roofs of the houses. It took 18 months to build the houses.

Article Abstract:
The structure of the Lindsay Johnston House in New South Wales, Australia, and its details have been determined by the ecological principles of achieving maximum benefit with minimum resources, responding to changing environmental conditions and recycling. The fly roof controls the environment beneath, as well as acting as a water collection surface. Both the roof and the breezeway benefit from siting and orientation. The house is intended to be self-sufficient and benign in all its environmental impacts.

Article Abstract:
Australian architect Lindsay Johnston has designed an environmentally friendly house in the eucalyptus forests of New South Wales, using materials made primarily from steel. The barrel shaped house is built in a sunny but isolated position which allows solar panelling to generate electricity and hot water, while providing maximum shade for the occupants. Water is collected from the roof making the house self-sufficient in an area where there are no utilities.
