Japan's controversial kingmaker Ozawa decides it's his turn to hold top post

Japanese politician Ichiro Ozawa has announced his candidacy as the opposition standard bearer in the coming national elections. Ozawa, once content with working in the background of party politics, wants to head the Shinshinto Party in its showdown with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He is known for his bluntness and some of his policies are considered radical including his insistence of Japanese involvement in UN peacekeeping and security efforts.

Ozawa's election as opposition leader sets stage for clash with LDP chief

Political analysts in Japan believe that Ichiro Ozawa's election as the head of the opposition Shinshinto party will bring on a clash with his longtime rival, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) chief Ryutaro Hashimoto. Ozawa, who won over former Prime Minister Tsutomu Hata, now faces the challenge of holding the opposition party together. He will also have to come up with a strategy for regaining the offensive against the LDP.

Japan's crusade for reforms leaves old guard unharmed

Japanese prosecutors have caught Shin Kanemaru transporting gold bars from his basement. This puts an end to the 38-year monopoly of the Liberal Democratic Party. Hopes for newer and younger reform-minded politicians to replace the Liberal Democrats have been rekindled. However, the Liberal Democrats have survived and have grown in influence. No charges have yet been filed against national politicians.
