Japan's sick banks
Article Abstract:
There is a need for a restructuring of Japan's banking industry. Some banks are having to reduce lending and their cost of capital has risen. The US and Sweden have successfully tackled crises in their banking industries, but the scale of the bad debt problem is greater in Japan. There have been proposals for a bridge bank, but a better solution may be that followed in the US and Sweden. Overcapacity can be reduced in the banking industry, but the government has to be bold and take rapid action.

Sayonara? Japanese banks
Article Abstract:
While the Japanese banking crisis has been devastating, it was thought that at least the nation's top 20 banks were safe from dissolution. However it now appears that Nippon Credit Bank and Hokkaido Takushoku Bank, both among the top 20 banks, could be shutdown by Japan's Finance Ministry.
