Jewellers buff up their ad strategies

Specialty jewelry store chain Zale Corp of Irving, TX, has acquired Peoples Jewelers of Toronto, Ontario, for $115 million. Zale said that it will retain the Peoples banner because of the brand's strength in the Canadian market. Zale will also step up the marketing in Canada to boost the market share of the 175-store Peoples Jeweler. Meanwhile, jeweleer Henry Birks and Sons of Montreal has launched a C$15-million renovation program and will step up its marketing to prepare for the increased competition.

Online privacy is a persisting issue in Canada that all sectors are attempting to address, including the Canadian Marketers Assn (CMA). Canadians who want to ensure online privacy can wait for software being rushed to market that is designed to keep the identity of World Wide Web surfers anonymous. They can also wait for a pending federal privacy and commerce law called Bill C-6, which is expected to have a final reading late in 2000 and become effective in 2001.

Reitmans bets on 'lifestyle' stores
Article Abstract:
Reitmans Ltd, a Montreal, Quebec-based apparel retailer, is opening a chain of stores under the new RW and CO banner in 1999. The stores are designed to target 18- to 30-year-old people and will initially open in malls in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec. The RW and CO stores will be supported by a newspaper markeiting campaign to be launched by the end of July.
