KERALA AGRI BANK RIDES THE BOOM IN NON-FARM SECTOR
Article Abstract:
Kerala State Co-operative Agriculture and Rural Development Bank's earnings from lending has increased from Rs111.30 crore in 1994-95 to Rs207.46 crore in 1996-97, while net profit has risen from Rs2.08 crore to Rs4.16 crore in the same period. Its non- farming lending (excluding rural housing) has risen by 33 percent to Rs47 crore (Rs35 crore). The bank's improved performance in the last three years follows the decision of the National Housing Bank to classify the entire Kerala district as rural excluding Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram for the purpose of lending. The net profit of the State Bank of Mysore has come down by 82 percent to Rs1.95 crore in the third quarter of 1998-99 against Rs10.94 crore in the third quarter of 1997-98. The bank registered an income of Rs190.80 crore compared to Rs169.13 crore. It posted a net profit of Rs27.45 crore on an income of Rs587.68 crore in the first nine months of 1998-99 against a net profit of Rs36.42 crore on an income of Rs523.55 crore in the first nine months of 1997-98. Bank of Rajasthan has registered a net loss of Rs44.25 crore for the nine months ended December 31, 1998. This has increased the total accumulated losses of the bank to Rs132 crore. It showed a total income of Rs296.85 crore, of which, other income accounted for Rs32.56 crore.
