KLM to lighten state load
Article Abstract:
Financial experts have acclaimed the ingenuity of a scheme proposed by the Dutch government and KLM concerning the sale of part of the government's shareholdings in the airline. The government plans to reduce its stake in the airline from 38% to 25%, selling 17.29 million ordinary shares back to KLM in a deal worth $563 million. The deal will enable the government to reduce its national debt, which is above the EMU criteria of 60% of gross domestic product, and allow KLM more independence and the opportunity to increase profit per share by 20% through its withdrawal of the re-purchased shares.

Dutch focus on broadcasting sales
Article Abstract:
The Netherlands government is expected to sell its 59% share in the national radio and television company, Nozema, in addition to its intended divestment of the broadcasting facilities company, NOB. The government want to free up the Dutch media market and this is an ideal opportunity to encourage expansion of the private sector. The NOB sale will raise approximately 400 million Dutch guilders. The government will consider Dutch venture capital companies, a major broadcaster or foreign company to sell the shares to.

Spain budgets for Iberia next year
Article Abstract:
The privatization of Spanish national airline Iberia, which is scheduled to take place in the second half of 1999, is a politically sensitive issue. This is a cause of concern for British Airways, which with American Airlines is expected to take 10% of Iberia. If this deal goes ahead, then Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales, government holding concern for state-owned assets, will start seeking a group of local investors to establish a core shareholding.
