Knocking knees
Article Abstract:
Asian currencies began to recover in 1998 from a fall led by the Thai baht in 1997. The baht has again dropped in value in 1999, but its fall has not had the same impact. Most currencies have returned to normal, with the exception of the Indonesian rupiah. The problems of Indonesia are seen as distinct from those of neighboring countries, so contagion does not seem likely. US interest rates affect these currencies, but their problems have been linked to those of individual economies.

Magic ingredients: all the makings of a bright future are there, so don't go and spoil it all
Article Abstract:
Acute economists should resist extreme attitudes toward economic conditions in East Asia. Before Fall, 1997, attitudes about Asian 'tigers' were far too optimistic. In the wake of the crisis, scenarios have been too grim. A model of a moderate approach to East Asian financial recovery is presented.

How many paths to salvation?
Article Abstract:
A myth growing around the East Asian economic debacle is that similar underlying causes apply to each nation. In fact, significant differences exist between Indonesia, Malaysia, and South Korea, for example. No one model for recovery can apply to these disparate economies.
