Thailand ranks 48th among France's clients, and represented a FFr 1bn trade deficit in 1997, due to a 21% drop in French exports, which came to FFr 422mn. The principal export items to Thailand are beverages and flour milling products which represent a 45% drop while flour milling products exports rose from FFr 94mn in 1996 to FFr 101mn in 1997. Dairy products rank third, representing FFr 44mn, up 92%. The leading products exported are dry milk and whey. The FFr 457mn trade deficit with Indonesia, France's 64th ranking client, is due to the 3.5% in imports into France and the 6% drop in exports. The leading products exported are animal feed, followed by dairy products with FFr 35mn. The principal products sold are dry milk, whey, and cheese. Sugar exports, the fourth largest item, represented FFr 20.5mn, up 88%. Mineral water exports rose 5%. Vietnam is France's 67th ranking client, which represented a trade deficit of FFr 193mn, due to the 62% rise in French imports and the 12% drop in exports. The principal item is represented by flour milling products, followed by beverages, which posted a 40% drop in exports, and dairy products exports which rose from FFr 22mn to FFr 23mn. Cheeses are the leading products sold. France has a FFr 9mn deficit with Laos, with imports up 218% and French exports up 40%. French exports mainly concern beverages, which represent 52%, and malt, which represents 48%. France has a FFr 4mn trade deficit with Burma compared with a FFr 6mn deficit in 1996. Exports consist entirely of flour million products and beverages. France exports only mineral water to Brunei, which represents FFr 2.2mn.

French food product exports to Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay) represented FFr 762mn in 1997, up 5% from FFr 727mn in 1996, while French imports from this region represented FFr 8.421bn, up 13%. This gives France a FFr 659bn trade deficit with Mercosur of FFr 7.659bn, compared with a trade deficit of FFr 6.707bn in 1996. France imports animal feed, coffee and vegetable preparations from Mercosur, and it exports drinks and flour-milling products. Mercosur represented only 0.3% of France's total exports in 1997, which held stable compared with 1996. Of the four countries which make up Mercosur, Brazil is France's leading partner. In 1997, France's food exports to Brazil dropped to FFr 499mn compared with FFr 616mn in 1996, while imports from Brazil rose from FFr 5.495bn in 1996 to FFr 6.29bn. Beverages are France's leading exports to Brazil, with a turnover of FFr 162mn in 1997, up 47% from 1996. France exports mainly wine, which represented FFr 134mn in 1997 compared with FFr 90mn in 1996. Flour milling products, the second biggest item, represented FFr 126mn, up 2% from 1996, followed by canned products and groceries with FFr 60mn, up 58%, and dairy products with FFr 58mn, down 67.4%, from 1996. This drop is due to powdered milk posted FFr 11mn in sales, plummeting 90%, while cheese and whey exports posted double digit growth. Cheese represented FFr 22mn, up 21%, and whey represented 15mn, up 34%.

French food exports to the nine countries in the ASEAN region (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand Viet Nam, Burma, and Laos) came to FFr 3.4bn in 1997, up 13.5% from 1996, for a trade surplus of FFr 0.4bn. Exports to these countries represent only 1.5% of France's total exports. France has a trade surplus in five of these nine countries: Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Burma, and Brunei. It makes its three biggest trade surpluses in Singapore, with a FFr 1.4bn trade surplus, in Malaysia, with a FFr 365mn trade surplus, and in the Philippines with a FFr 282mn trade surplus. France's exports to Singapore, its 22nd biggest client, up 22%, consist mainly of beverages, which represent 78% of the total exports, particularly spirits and dairy products, which represent 6% of the exports, and a turnover of FFr 92mn, led by dry milk. Exports to Malaysia, France's 41st largest client, are up 7%, and also consist mainly of beverages (72% of the total) particularly, spirits. Dairy product exports came to FFr 27mn, down 35% because of stopping exports of dry milk. Now the leading dairy product export is whey. Exports to the Philippines, France's 44th largest client, have skyrocketed 1.4%, and consist mainly of beverages, dairy products (FFr 97mn). Dry milk leads; sales rose 184%, followed by milled flour products, meat, and tobacco.
