LIC TO PROVIDE GROUP INSURANCE FOR LANDLESS FARM LABOURERS
Article Abstract:
Life Insurance Corporation has announced that it will extend free group insurance to cover 1.2 crore landless agricultural labourers and 1.23 crore integrated rural development (IRDP) programme beneficiaries in 1999. The premia of the IRDP beneficiaries will be paid by the Union labour department while landless agricultural labourers will be given the insurance cover through the Central Social Security Fund. The dependents of IRDP beneficiaries will get a compensation of Rs5000 in the event of natural death and Rs10,000 for accidental death or permanent disability. The dependents of the landless labourers will get a compensation of Rs2000 in the event of death. (khr)

CENTRE TO SET UP FORECASTING CENTRE FOR FARM PRODUCTS
Article Abstract:
The government of India plans to set up a National Forecasting Centre. The move follows a huge rise in the prices of essential commodities due to lack of advance planning by the government. The proposed Centre will conduct a real time assessment of surpluses and deficits of agricultural products. The Centre will also chalk out plans to deal with the rise in the prices of these products.
