Northwest England has seen a swing to Labour, but the party's target of 22 additional Parliament seats in the region is not a sure bet. Conservatives play up small economic gains, and Militant candidates have hurt Labour. The parties regional strengths and weaknesses are analyzed.

Not such a balanced outcome: coping with a hung parliament

No party appears likely to win a parliamentary majority in the UK's Apr 1992 elections. Both Conservative Party leader John Major and Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock will likely be forced to negotiate with smaller parties to attempt to form a minority government.
