Article Abstract:
The Soci t des Brasseries du Gabon (SOBRAGA) is the leader in Gabon for carbonated beverages and beer. SOBRAGA's beer production increased from 816,000 hectolitres in 1995 to 820,000 hectolitres in 1997, and its carbonated drinks production rose from 416,000 hl in 1995 to 600,000 hectolitres in 1997. SOBRAGA's turnover has risen 36% in three years, and is expected to come to CFA Fr 68bn compared with CFA Fr 62.8bn in 1997. Gabon's total beverage production rose only 1.4% from 1996 to 1997, due to the 4.3% drop in wine production and a 4.63% drop in beer production, while the production of carbonated drinks rose 14%. The beverage industry represented CFA Fr 54.822bn in 1997, up 2.6% from 1996.

According to figures released by OIS, the international sugar organisation, in February 1998, Cuba exported 431,268 tons of sugar, compared to 800,764 tons in February 1997. From October 1997 to February 1998, exports were registered at 680,587 tons compared to 1,088mn tons in the October 1996-February 1997 period. For 1997-1998, it is predicted that the cane harvest will not produce more than 3.2mn tons, down from the 1996-97 figure of 4.25mn. The government will raise the price paid to producers to 50% in order to combat make up for the fall in yield.

Gabon La production de cigarettes en hausse
Article Abstract:
The Soci t des Cigarettes Gabonaise (SOCIGA) is the only company to produce cigarettes in Gabon. Coralma-Bollor owns 88% of SOCIGA, which sold 17,046 packets of cigarettes in 1997, up 12%, for CFA Fr 6.9bn, up 9.1%. SOCIGA's activity was stimulated by the higher exports to the Congo in 1997. SOCIGA intends to reduce imports of shredded tobacco, which represent 250 tonnes per year. It is developing tobacco crops in Gabon in order to do this, and expects to produce 50 tonnes locally by the year 2001 compared with 1.2 tonnes in 1997.
