The German firm Licht forecasts that the 1997-1998 African sugar production will come to 8.297mn tonnes, compared with 7.999mn tonnes in 1996-1997. Only Egypt's production will decrease, from 1.083mn tonnes in 1996-1997 to 996,000 tonnes in 1997-1998. South Africa's production will increase from 2.437mn tonnes in 1996-1997 to 2.573mn tonnes in 1997-1998, Mauritius' production will increase from 624,000 tonnes to 659,000 tonnes, Sudan's production will increase from 549,000 tonnes to 603,000 tonnes, Swaziland's production will increase from 458,000 tonnes to 512,000 tonnes, Zimbabwe's production will increase form 575,000 tonnes to 593,000 tonnes and Kenya's production will increase from 436,000 tonnes to 446,000 tonnes.

Article Abstract:
The Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture estimates the sugar production in Mauritius during the 1998-1999 season at 5.85mn tonnes, and it also plans the cultivation of an additional 1,800 hectares. The Ministry of Agriculture expects a production of 640,000 tonnes, compared with 610,000 tonnes in 1997-1998, up 4.6%. The island has an export quota to the European Union of a little over 500,000 tonnes, and an agreement for a preferential additional quota of 85,000 tonnes. In 1996, Mauritius' exports to the European Union came to 538,806 tonnes.

Article Abstract:
A Mauritius-based consortium of three sugar companies and Thierry Lagesse, a businessman, has been awarded the contract for renovating the Luabo and Marromeu sugar refineries in Mozambique. The consortium will obtain US 70mn from banks in Mauritius, and from international financial institutions in order to renovate the refineries. The renovation of the Marromeu sugar refinery is expected to produce 50,000 tonnes of sugar by the year 2000, and 115,000 tonnes by the year 2006. The second refinery will be renovated later.
