Industrial and consumer confidence may have fallen sharply, but the UK looks set to escape the recession forecast for many other industrialised nations. In 2001 and 2002, UK growth is expected to be higher than other G7 countries, thanks partly to fiscal expansion policies.

The UK's economy is showing clear signs that a recovery from the recession of the early 1990's is underway. The pound is rising against foreign currencies, and consumer confidence may improve in light of the Conservative Party's Apr 1992 election victory.

The number of UK men of working age who are classed as economically inactive has grown by 500,000 since 1993, to 3 mil. The trend is particularly marked amongst unskilled men, with relative demand for unskilled workers falling.
