Legacy of reform: Premadasa's policies turned the economy around
Article Abstract:
Sri Lanka's assassinated Pres Ranasinghe Premadasa supported market-oriented economic reforms that have helped bring greater prosperity to his country. As prime minister and then president under the United National Party government that came to power in 1977, Premadasa promoted both foreign investment and privatization. His policies induced foreign garment companies to set up factories in rural Sri Lanka. The new president, D.B. Wijetunga, has promised to carry on with Premadasa's reforms but may lack his political skill.

Onus on exports
Article Abstract:
India's foreign trade imbalance has been a perennial problem that has left foreign exchange reserves in a precarious level that is easily susceptible to the vagaries of nature such as droughts. To remedy the situation, the government will have to resort to offering exporters especially of agricultural products enough incentives to produce more. For a time, import controls have been imposed. With lifting of such controls, the expected surge in demand for exports needs to be offset by a proportional increase in exports.

Hold the phone: India's new telecoms rules disappoint investors
Article Abstract:
The rules concerning telecommunications competition that India issued recently and continues to clarify have convinced many investors that the sector cannot now be profitable. Those still interested have formed consortiums of local companies and foreign telecom operators, and most are petitioning for more clarifications, leading the Dept of Telecommunications to repeatedly delay the bid date. The rules appear heavily rigged in DOT's favor, forcing private investors to foot the bill for DOT expansion.
