Jolly spin-off magazines such as BBC Good Homes magazine, include tips to save on home extensions and not all of them are found to be cost saving. One of these tips suggests 'pay subcontractors direct' which is practically not wise as employing a main contractor for all the jobs collectively is more workable.

The case of Barnes v Time Talk that reached the court of appeal in March 2003 is discussed. The case dealt with issues relating to dishonesty and illegal contracts in the construction context.
