Leo Valiani
Article Abstract:
Leo Valiani was an Italian historian who also made history in 1945 when he ordered the death of Benito Mussolini after Mussolini had refused to surrender. He was born in Austria-Hungary and the end of that empire was the subject of one of his works. He became Italian after the annexation of his town by Italy under Mussolini in 1924, and was then imprisoned a number of times during the 1920s and 1930s as an agitator. He was a communist until Russia and Germany agreed to divide Poland, and he then joined the Italian Resistance.

Ahmad Shah Masoud
Article Abstract:
Ahmad Shah Masoud, who has died at the age of 49, was a scholar who became a guerrilla leader in Afghan, remaining a hero to many people despite being blamed for many civilian deaths. Masoud defended his country first against the Soviet army, and most recently against the Taliban.
