Article Abstract:
Relations between the European Union (EU) and Turkey, Ukraine and Russia will become more important as the EU takes on new members from eastern Europe. Relations between Turkey and the EU have improved following the Turkish earthquake of 1999 and subsequent aid from Greece. Ukraine is unlikely to be an EU member in the near future due to economic problems and corruption, but the EU has interests in preventing a collapse in Ukraine. Russia is too large to be an EU member, and there is friction over policy in Eastern Europe.

The ageing alliance
Article Abstract:
The alliance between Europe and the US has reflected US hegemony, and was based on a perception of common interests against the Soviet Union. This has changed, not so much with the end of the Soviet Union as with the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. The domination of the US in that conflict, and the superiority of its weapons has led to a call for a greater focus on security and defense in Europe. The United Kingdom backs this development, which has helped to shift the change in stance.

Wake up, Europe!
Article Abstract:
The recent attacks on Washington and New York may force the European Union (EU) to take a more serious approach to its own security. The EU is still very dependent on the US for security operations in areas including Macedonia, but the attacks on the US may change US and European policy.
