Prodi imperator
Article Abstract:
The European Union has set up a new European Commission which has been approved by the European parliament. The team that Romano Prodi has put together is likely to be more efficient than the previous commission, as well as more open. Outside work and assets are disclosed by commissioners so that it is clear where these could cause conflicts of interest with their work as commissioners. Prodi also aims to control the team, and this appears to involve more centralization of power, despite Prodi's stating that he aims to devolve decision-making.

New broom sweeps half clean
Article Abstract:
The European Commision's president-designate, Romano Prodi, is to announce the new set of commissioners, and the quality of the new team is not bad, though there has been no increase in the number of women. The European Parliament will scrutinise the new commissioners and can veto the whole team. The commision could clash with national governments since Prodi aims for a stronger commission. Prodi also has the task of tackling cynicism about the role of the commission.

The new team for Europe
Article Abstract:
The new head of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, has selected 19 people to help run the European Commission. He aims to make the commission stronger, reform it, make it corruption-free, and prepare for the planned enlargement of the European Union, which is to have new members from Eastern Europe. The most powerful commissioners are likely to be Mario Monti, head of competition policy, Pascal Lamy, head of trade, and Chris Patten, coordinator of foreign policy.
