Living dangerously
Article Abstract:
Six buildings in Taiwan, including Taipei's Minsheng Villa, were discovered to be emitting radioactivity hundreds of times above safe levels. The buildings were among the 100 that have so far been tested. It seems that Cobalt-60-contaminated steel scrap from ship sonar equipment were mistakenly mixed with reinforced steel bars and used for building construction from 1982-84. The government estimates that it would cost about $25 million merely to test all buildings built within that period. Meanwhile, Taiwan's Atomic Energy Council is under heavy criticism for overlooking a major health hazard.

Gone fishing: rogue trawlers may be dodging official driftnet ban
Article Abstract:
Environmentalists and foreigners are doubting disclosures that Taiwan's driftnet trawler fleets are already out of buisness. This fishing technique was prohibited the UN in an effort to prevent potential Western sanctions against Taiwan. There are indications, however, that despite the prohibition, several driftnet fishing activities are still going on in Taiwan. Observers claim that a total eradication is impossible because the technique is very profitable.
