Lonmin in takeover talks with Ashanti

Lonmin PLC announced that it is engaged in negotiations with Ashanti Goldfields Co. over possible full ownership. Lonmin is a listed mining firm based in London. Ashanti is based in Ghana. The negotiations are in a preliminary stage. An agreement would transform Lonmin into a full-fledged mining group. Ashanti said that it could be seeing heavy margin calls on its hedge books as a result of the recent rise in gold prices.

English China Clays agrees to raised bid

Imetal S.A. a French mining company, has made a deal to acquire specialty mineral and chemical group English China Clays PLC of England for $1.24 billion. This was the company's second bid. Imetal plans to consolidate English China Clays' kaolin business with its white pigments business to create a possible 20% or more market share.
