Looking for a strategic partner
Article Abstract:
Spolchemie (Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic), chemical company, should find a strategic partner within two years. The company is now holding negotiations with partners in the US, Europe and Asia. In 1998 Spolchemie saw a loss over 228 mil Kc owing to the inclusion of rectifying items for bad investments. The loss will be covered from future profits. The consolidated balance sheet for 1998, which includes the losses of Spolchemie's subsidiaries, states a loss of about 0.5 bil Kc. The 1997 loss was 2.15 bil Kc, owing to which the company has lowered its stock from 3.9 bil Kc to the current 1.9 bil Kc. After the losses in the past, at present the company is returning to profit. It is also working on the sale of all its subsidiaries except Synpo (Pardubice Czech Republic). To save money while buying and handling materials, the company will hire the consultancy firm A. T. Kearney. Besides, it is paying 1 mil Kc plus 10% of gross profit per month to the strategy consultancy firm Patria Finance (Czech Republic).

A strong partner with good contacts
Article Abstract:
Keramicke zavody (KZ) (Znojmo, Czech Republic) and Jihoceska keramika (JIKA) (Bechyne, Czech Republic), sanitary ceramics manufacturers, have to face strong competition on the Czech market together. Their common majority shareholder is the concern Laufen (Switzerland). Laufen helps the firms maintain their strong position on the market in spite of a decrease in demand for large-scale civil engineering in the Czech Republic. KZ and JIKA produce over 2.5 mil pieces of sanitary ceramics per year under common management. About 50% of the volume is intended for the domestic market. The firms want to develop their exports, which go mainly to countries of the former USSR under the trade mark JIKA. Both the firms have good contacts in Western European countries including Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. Each of the firms invests about 300 mil Kc per year in new technology and market development.
