Article Abstract:
Switzerland's engineering firms experienced a net 3.1% decline in overall turnover in 1996 despite a slight 2.7% increase in exports over 1995 levels. Among the problems faced by the engineering sector were sluggish demand in Switzerland and declines in new order volumes in the machine-building, electrical engineering and metal sectors. However, less disadvantageous exchange rates also helped boost exports, as did healthy growth in the sector's main export markets in Europe and North America. In 1996, the three top companies ranked according to turnover were ABB, Sulzer and Schindler.

See you in Sion?
Article Abstract:
Sion, Switzerland, is considered to be a front-runner in the race to become the host of the 2006 Winter Olympics. While it faces stiff competition from other sports centers in Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Poland, Sion is believed to be the best choice for the 2006 Olympics given its excellent tourism infrastructure and its role as cantonal capital of Valais, a region which has long been involved in organizing winter sports competitions. Sion also has strong public support for its bid and hopes to win the nod from the IOC when it meets in Seoul, South Korea, on Jun 19, 1999.
