S n gal Le lait de la discorde
Article Abstract:
The West African Monetary and Economic Union (WAME) is expected to talk over the new customs duties on dry milk in July 1998. The WAME commission and the countries which belong to this union hold differing opinions. Senegal and the Ivory Coast oppose the 5% tax recommended by the commission. Senegal has increased its customs duties from 7% to 25% in order to protect and develop the local milk industry and to reduce the impact of dairy product imports on the balance of trade. Dairy product imports represent 20,000 tonnes for CFA Fr 35bn annually.
