Mad John Bull disease
Article Abstract:
The UK's policy of being with Europe but not a full part of it merely serves to make the UK look foolish. If the UK continues with its policy of not participating in the single European currency, it will lose the opportunity to influence future developments within the European Union. Furthermore, it will not be in a position to stand firm against any future German domination of Europe. Most ordinary Britons would not like to see the country's status diminished any further, and for this reason the government should make a clear commitment to the success of the European Union.

So who needs the euro?
Article Abstract:
There is a debate on whether Britain's economic weight would be greater within the group of countries forming part of European monetary union, or outside this group. Relations with Europe comprised a problem that divided the Conservative party during the time of John Major's government. Prime minister, Tony Blair, has been hesitant over monetary union and this does not appear to have damaged Britain's role in Europe. Britain has also taken a leading role in the political life of Europe.

A power in the world
Article Abstract:
Britain has seen an erosion of power affecting its global role, but is still a member of the Security Council of the United Nations and is also a nuclear power with a professional army. Britain needs allies in the international arena, and has chosen the US as an ally in the past, though is moving closer toward mainland Europe. Britain is less important to the US than some British observers believe, and links with mainland Europe make Britain more attractive to the US.
