Made in Japan; Taiwan vies for a piece of the other big screen market
Article Abstract:
Taiwanese companies want to make their own color liquid-crystal display screens for use in laptop computers, but Japanese and S Korean production is ramping up and prices are falling quickly. Just one Taiwanese company now makes color LCDs, with one more planning to in 1996, but they fall short of a 6-inch width, compared to the 10-plus inches needed for computers. Some analysts expect Taiwan to have only 10% of the LCD market in 2000. Even if more Taiwanese makers appear, they will need supplies only Japan can offer.

No transport of delight
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's transportation infrastructure is overloaded and inadequate, with little change in sight. Repeated plans for various projects have been held up by bureaucratic turf wars and indecision, leading to expensive construction delays. THe govt hopes to open one of five planned subway lines by year's end but cracking support pillars make that sound dubious. Some observers say the govt is the problem and advocate widespread use of build-operate-transfer schemes, while others blame expensive foreign consultants.
