Mahathir goes on and on ...
Article Abstract:
The United Malays National Organization (UMNO) is headed by Mohamed Mahathir, and won elections in Nov 1999, with the loss of some support. There have been calls for the reform of UMNO, but Mahathir has been supported as party president in an unopposed vote of the Supreme Council of UMNO on Jan 3 2000. There is some concern in UMNO over the increased strength of the opposition PAS, a conservative Islamist party, and that the PAS could seek to implement Islamic codes more strictly in Malaysia.

Just do as the doctor says
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has countered charges of corruption and nepotism, by claiming that all Malays have benefited from privatizations. He claims that foreigners have caused Malaysia's economic problems, while his deputy,Anwar Ibrahim, has expressed concern about corruption in the region. A speaker at the 1998 conference of the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO), Ahmad Zahid, has attacked corruption, and has himself been attacked by Mahathir for not using UMNO channels for his complaints. Malaysia faces a contraction in gross domestic product and problems of domestic bad debts, and these problems could undermine Mahathir's position if he does not tackle them.

Trust me, I'm the doctor
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's ruling national Front coalition could win elections due to be held at the end of Nov 1999. There has been political reform in neighboring countries, but this has not occurred in Malaysia, where the former deputy prime minister has been jailed for six years. The economy is shrinking, and there has been criticism of prestige projects as a misuse of resources. The United Malays Nationa Organization is the main National Front party, and has been skilful in its strategy. Assets have been transferred to Malays, and the media are controlled by the government.
