Making projects work
Article Abstract:
The World Bank is encountering difficult times as it seeks to fund multilateral projects, including several in Asia. Donors and burrowers press the Bank to tighten and loosen credit, while non-governmental organizations oppose projects deemed economically or environmentally harmful. Bank Pres Lewis Preston's absence due to heart problems has complicated the situation. However, acting Pres Ernest Stern on Jul 12, 1993 implemented reforms intended to improve the overseeing of Bank-funded projects. US commitment to the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank is in doubt.

Looking after number one
Article Abstract:
The US' self-interest, sponsorship of market mechanisms and focus on domestic concerns, as seen in its unwillingness to concede protection of domestic commercial interests, hinders progress on international agreements about environmental problems. Furthermore, hypocritical US demands for environmental purity from developing nations were said to have caused bitterness between North and South in the Earth Summit. However, US defenders claim that other countries, including Asia's developing countries, should share some of the guilt.

Scrambled jets
Article Abstract:
US defense companies including McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics Corp are being encouraged by their government to develop relatively cheap advanced fighter aircraft to be offered to Malaysia in the US' bid to compete with Russian-made defence weapons. Malaysia is speculated to have had offers of 18 MiG29s and six Mi35 helicopter gunships from Russia for $760 million. Although the deal has not been finalized, the US is desperately trying to ward off Russia's defence weapon marketing initiatives in Southeast Asia.
