Malaysia returns to English
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad is emphasizing the importance of English in the national curriculum and encouraging the education system's liberalization. He has called knowledge of English vital to international trade, growth, and development, and hopes to attract branches of prestigious overseas universities to Malaysian soil. That is a natural outgrowth of the twinning system implemented in the mid-1980s, and would both enhance the nation's prestige and save it valuable foreign exchange.

Forging Malaysia's indentity
Article Abstract:
Malaysia hopes to forge a national identity among its ethnically diverse population. Foreign minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is proud that despite a population 60% Malay, 30% Chinese, and with many Indians, and with Islam as its official religion, Malayans live together in peace and harmony. The minister believes that identifying as Malaysians rather than with ethnic origins is key to maintaining that harmony and that industrial growth will bring the pride and prosperity that will forward that goal.
