Man from Palawan: a country lad's rise to prominence
Article Abstract:
Ramon Mitra is perceived to be the leading presidential candidate in the May 1992,elections in the Philippines. His political prominence is deemed unusual, considering his less than dynamic political background and colorless personality. Born in 1928 in Palawan, Mitra later studied law, became a reporter and entered politics. He was elected senator in 1971, and was a Marcos political prisoner during martial law. He became the House Speaker during Corazon Aquino's administration. Mitra's sure win is attributed to the mechanisms of his political party and the backing of Benigno Aquino's family and of Jose Cojuangco.
