Maturing Mozambique
Article Abstract:
Joaquim Chissano, the leader of Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique, looks set to be re-elected as president, but Frelimo may not win the election for Mozambique's national assembly. The economy has shown strong growth, and foreign investment has been attracted to Mozambique. The small middle class, mainly located on the capital, Maputo, has benefited from changes, but there is still poverty in rural areas. The opposition Renamo has tended to emphasize tradition more than frelimo, and tradition is important in rural areas.

Hoping for peace: Mozambique
Article Abstract:
Both the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) want to avoid a resumption of the country's civil war. Elections have been delayed until Oct 1994. The postponement may help the conflicting groups iron out democratic reforms more thoroughly.
