UPM-Kymmene and Stora Enso post lower profit

Forest products company UPM-Kymmene Corp. and Stora Enso Oyj reported lower third-quarter profits but surpassed market expectations. Stora Enso experienced a drop in net profit to Euro213.7 million, while UPM-Kymmene saw its net profit cut by almost half to E157 million from E303 million.

Finnish paper maker UPM warns rise in demand will be slight

UPM-Kymmene Corp. of Finland posted a year-to-year improvement of 9% in its pretax profits for the fourth-quarter of 1998. The company also cautioned that paper products demand will see only a slight improvement in 1999. UPM's president and chief executive officer, Juha Niemala, said that the company's demand for the fourth-quarter fell significantly. UPM's 1998 pretax profit rose 53% to 8.54 billion markkaa ($1.61 billion) over 1997.
