Microsoft starts travel agency

Microsoft Corp. introduced Expedia, the popular online travel-agency site, in the UK. Before the launching of the UK site, the software maker has been largely busy in the European e-commerce trials. Microsoft, which plans a bigger European rollout starting in 1999, hopes that its vast offerings as well as the popularity of the Expedia site will attract UK customers. The Expedia site will feature over 700,000 traditional fares and discount fares for flights from the UK, links to local transportation and 750,000 travel packages, hotel and car reservations.

Dialog shares decline 13% on sales data

Dialog Corp.'s share value dropped 13% as a result of disappointing sales figures for the first-half of 1998. Dialog said that its pretax profits for the period improved to 6.8 million pound sterling ($11.4 million). During the same period in 1997, the company posted 2 million pound sterling in pretax profits. Dialog posted sales of 88.8 million pound sterling. During the same period in 1997, the company posted 14 million pound sterling in sales.

Dixons shares rise 5% on positive 1st-half news. (Dixons Group PLC)

Consumer electronics vendor Dixons Group PLC, reports 5% increase in its stock price due to profitable earnings for six months ending November 1998. Dixons Group reported revenue of $131.9 million, due to increase in retail sales for the Christmas season. Perhaps the brightest spot in Dixons Group's performance was Freeserve, its new free Internet service. Freeserve has 900,000 subscribers.
