Mirror images: opposition apes Congress Party woes

India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently seen its vaunted discipline and unity evaporate, threatening an anticipated victory in national elections in 1996. The BJP rose to remarkable power from obscurity a decade ago, in part by playing up dissensions and factionalism in the now-ruling Congress Party. Recently, though, the BJP has suffered from a power struggle in Gujarat state, followed by the embarrassing collapse of a political experiment in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, where an alliance had been attempted with a party representing untouchables.
