Museums and galleries
Article Abstract:
New museums and galleries are likely to take the form of locally-based small museums focusing on a particular topic, such as rural crafts of industrial archaeology. The route of the visitor is important when designing a museum, and may be based on historical progression. Design of an environment which does not damage works is also important. Exhibits must be saved from damage by temperature, light and humidity. Security of buildings is best achieved by strong barriers over doors and windows, and by protecting objects in bolted cases. Details of books on designing museums and galleries, contacts and buildings to visit are also presented.

High-powered collaboration for a new museum
Article Abstract:
The design of the new museum for the Roayl Armouries in Leeds, England is dominated by the exhibits. A multi-disciplinart design team is working with the museum's staff to devise a building which will allow the armour and weaponry to be shown in context and be an inviting attraction for the public. Situated in the Clarence Dock redevelopment area, the museum will be based on the concept of an interior street with galleries on either side. Full plans have yet to be developed and the exterior elevation has not been finalised.

The museum is now the main attraction
Article Abstract:
The Royal Instuitute of British Architects is dislplaying ten of the designs included in the Austrian government's planned restructuring of its museums. The museums themselves seem to take precedence over their contents as works of art. The most impressive is the Museum Quarter scheme for Vienna designed by Ortner and Ortner. The exhibition explores the differences between spacial form and spacial enclosure but there is little information on the relationship between architecture and the object.
