NIRMA POSTS MARGINAL INCREASE IN NET PROFIT

Nirma Ltd has increased its net profit by 1.56 percent to Rs113.88 crore for the nine months ended December 31, 1998 against Rs112.13 crore in the nine months ended December 31, 1997. Its total gross sales increased by 24.9 percent to Rs1031.50 crore from Rs825.81 crore. The company's depreciation charges increased to Rs23.04 crore from Rs10.14 crore while interest cost increased to Rs25.49 crore from Rs0.30 crore. It improved its gross sales by 35.4 percent to Rs379.07 crore in the quarter ended December 31, 1998 against Rs279.88 crore in the quarter ended December 31, 1997. (khr)

NIRMA TO SOAP UP MIDDLE CLASS

Nirma Ltd, which captured the low end of the country's soap powder market, now plans to do the same in the middle-income bracket. It now plans to launch a new range of low-priced products. It has already started with premium soaps and a range of shampoos and is also planning a toothpaste. The company is India's largest detergent producer and has a 38 percent share of the market. NIRMA NET PROFIT DECLINES BY 3.3%

Nirma Ltd, a detergent producer, has posted a 3.39 percent fall in its net profit to Rs69 crore during the first half of 1998-99 (Rs71 crore during the first half of 1997-98). The fall in the net profit is attributed to a rise in depreciation and interest charges. During the period, it posted a 19.5 percent rise in the total income to Rs652 crore (Rs546 crore) and a 29 percent rise in the gross profit to Rs112 crore. (ag)
