New deal: an ace economy, but a political wildcard
Article Abstract:
Though Hong Kong's medium-term economic picture seems bright as of mid-1996, political uncertainties have dimmed the expectations of some experts and investors. The third annual Far Eastern Economic Review-sponsored 'Countdown to 1997' conference featured a slew of optimistic speakers, notably former US president and ambassador to China George Bush. Despite their enthusiasm, concern persists about such events as Chinese firms' acquisition of elements of Hong Kong's economy. Likely post-1997 Hong Kong chief executive Lo Tak-shing also spoke.

Courting qualms; Hong Kong businesses face handover hurdles
Article Abstract:
Many legal and tax issues remain unresolved as Britain plans to hand over Hong Kong to China in 1997. The uncertainties have many Hong Kong businesses making arrangements to have future disputes handled by overseas arbitration centers instead of by Hong Kong courts. The lack of progress in addressing these issues results from the unwillingness of the Chinese government to deal with the British administration in Hong Kong. Issues that remain problematic included treatment of cross-border court cases and arbitration awards.
