Parallel aims
Article Abstract:
Architect Louis Kahn can be most closely connected with European architects of the post-war era, despite being of an earlier generation. His career did not really take off until the 1950s, and there was no corresponding architectural movement in the USA at that time. His attention to detail and his ability to design features which were not readily available give his buildings a unique quality, while his buildings in India and Bangladesh show a later stage in his development, being conceived on a much larger scale. Some of Kahn's major projects are reviewed.

Re-examining the house
Article Abstract:
Aseries of houses designed by architect Louis Kahn early in his career demonstrates the ideas on which his later work was to be based. They call into question the nature of the house itself, but also contain the concepts used in his later, greatest buildings. In his later works, Kahn uses a non-domestic scale, taking a new approach to the ordering of structures, and his last building, the Paul Mellon Center for British Art, New Haven, CT, bears the signs of the beginning of a new sort of integration in his work.
