New life under Labour: Elsie Owusu, founder member of the Society of Black Architects, is on an expanding career path - including television
Article Abstract:
Elsie Owusu is the founder member of the Society of Black Architects (SOBA) and has run her own practice for 12 years. Owusu came to Britain in 1962 and she graduated from the AA in 1980, later working for the solon Housing Association and the GLC's women's design service. Her practice works mainly for black or minority ethnic groups, or women, as Owusu felt that these groups were not well served. The practice has specialised in housing, but has recently received commissions for cultural buildings. She feels that although there are wide differences between SOBA members, there is a shared experience of being Commonwealth architects.

Article Abstract:
An award winning design for new restaurants at the National Trustof Scotland's Inverewe Gardens, Wester Ross has been cancelled. The project, designed by Richard Murphy Architects, has been widely praised. The Trust has been criticised for lacking the courage to continue with the building. Construction was to have started in mid Dec 1992 but the Trust has stopped all work after discovering the project would be 100,000 pounds sterling over budget. Architects suggest the Trust's decision was premature and alternative funding should have been sought.
