Newbridge to acquire control of Korea First Bank
Article Abstract:
Newbridge Capital Ltd has agreed to acquire 51% of state-owned Korea First Bank in South Korea. The acquisition will be a direct investment into Korea First rather than a purchase of government-held shares, which account for 94% of the bank. The US-owned investment firm is likely to form a consortium to acquire the bank. The deal will make Korea First the first South Korean commercial bank to be owned by a foreign company.

Managers remain positive on Asia despite slowdown
Article Abstract:
Asian Wall Street Journal Asset Allocation Panel participants remain confident on the Asian market despite the region's weak economic growth. Their concern is based on the decline of stock markets in India and South Korea and the significant decrease in exports. The fund managers believe that the slowdown is cyclical and that Asian exports will rise by 1997 when the US, Europe and Japan realize strong economic growth.
