Nissan concedes DaimlerChrysler could take stake

As competition grows fiercer in the automotive industry, the company appears to be part of the growing trend of business consolidations. By acquiring an equity stake in Nissan, DaimlerChryler would increase its opportunity in the Asian market. Nissan would benefit through exposure to DaimlerChrysler's technological advances.

BMW plans new models to boost Rover

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) announced that it will spend $1.5 billion to build two new models at its Rover subsidiary. BMW expects Rover's 1998 unit sales in Germany to go over 41,000 units. BMW is still trying to turn around the troubled Rover unit since it acquired the U.K. auto maker in 1994. The productivity gap at Rover is now at 30%, but BMW is hoping for a 5% gap by mid-1999 after it sealed a work pact with the unions.
